Vampire dairies season premiere starts off about two months after the epic season 2 finale. Elena has turned 18 and Caroline insists on throwing her a birthday bash. But Elena is focused on Stefan, who has disappeared from town ever since saving Damon’s life. Both Damon and Elena are searching for Stefan, although Damon has secretly been looking for Stefan with Alaric behind her back.
Damon and Alaric follow a lead in the premiere that shows them exactly what Stefan has been up to. Damon finally catches up with Stefan but unfortunately Stefan does not want to go back home and tells Damon to buzz off. Klaus and Stefan, meanwhile, are tracking down a werewolf named Ray Sutton (guest star David Gallagher). Jeremy meanwhile is working at the grill and trying to figure out why he sees ghosts. Finally, heartbroken Alaric is still trying to recover from Jenna’s death while trying to act parent to Elena and Jeremy.

As it turns out, Klaus has taken Stefan out of town to help him with a plan to gain even more power. And he’s tracked down werewolf Ray Sutton to help him with the plan, but, unfortunately, things don’t seem to be working. Elena, frustrated by the lack of progress in finding Stefan, has come up with a new plan to track him down. Damon and Alaric reluctantly agree to help her, but Damon ends up getting into a fight with an unexpected enemy. As Jeremy continues to be plagued by the ghosts of his ex-girlfriends, he decides to turn to Matt for help in understanding what the girls want from him. Tyler will be facing an emotional confrontation with his mother just as Caroline is in need of his help.
